SUPER CUP REVIEW
LIVERPOOL 2 - 2 CHELSEA (5-4 PENS)
It was a heartbreaking night for Chelsea fans everywhere. After such a disappointing display at Old Trafford on the weekend, a win against Liverpool would of lifted hope for the upcoming season and taken off pressure from Lampard with an early trophy but unfortunately and unfairly, lost 5-4 on penalties due to a Tammy Abraham missed penalty.
My Thoughts On The Game...
My Thoughts On The Game...
It was hard luck, we played some excellent football and competed with the best side in Europe and outplaying them too!
There were elements of #SarriBall in last nights game going to a 4-3-3 with Kante playing in a similar a role to last season...but it seemed as though the team had a little more freedom compared. Kante was allowed to venture out more with Jorginho back into his "regista role" and Kovacic doing what he does best of dribbling passed players and taking the ball forward.
We were the better side but unfortunately playing the better football doesn't win you games. Although, last nights performance gives me so much more confidence for the rest of the season. We looked so good going forward with the exciting new Pulisic and the likes of youngsters to come of Mount, Abraham and Tomori all impressing me. The defence still needs some work done but with Rudiger and the young starlet Reece James still to come back from injury, it will only improve us.
Not to mention we still need Callum Hudson Odoi, Willian and Ruben Loftus Cheek all to come back from injury, I am quietly confident we can get top four this season and surprise a few clubs.
Top Four Chances...
The only doubt I have about our top four chances this season is of course our striking options with the likes of Michy Batshuayi, Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham.
I love Giroud but unfortunately with the way Lampard likes to play, I don't think he has the same energy or stamina Chelsea needs this season with Lamps liking to play pressing and quick attacking football. Bottom line for Batshuayi is that he's not good enough. I don't trust him or see him leading our line. He may have the energy to fulfill Lampard's plans but in front of goal or making vital runs he doesn't quite cut it for me (not to mention he couldn't even get into Valencia's starting XI on last seasons loan). Leaving the young Tammy Abraham left.
I think from watching last nights Super Cup (despite his missed penalty) and from the first 65 minutes against Man United, he proved he has some fantastic qualities. His hold up play on the ball is nice, he looks quick and not to mention that he can fend off players too with his pace and strength.
The only problem Tammy has (which all that matters for a striker) is goals. He was so close against United hitting the post and also very a whisker away with a ball across the box against Liverpool which went just wide. I feel as though maybe he is not quite ready for Chelsea's starting 11 and maybe this chance has come too soon for him with another loan spell might of been best but with Chelsea's circumstances he may be our best hope.
If Tammy can get his name on the score sheet and rack up some goals then he would be some handful for teams this season and possibly even get us a top four finish!
Three best players from last night...
Kante. He was the heartbeat in our team last night showing off how world class he is despite a rumored "swollen ankle". The way he can drift in and our of players in the middle of the park is so impressive. He will be such an important player for us getting top four, I love how energetic he is and how he just breathes passion into the squad. I am running out way's the compliment this man.
Pedro. He was also on fine form last night compared to how he played against United. The best thing about Pedro is his work rate. Throughout the entire game last night he was like a racehorse - constantly making runs on the wing, attempting overhead balls against Liverpool's high line, tracking back to help Azpiliqueta and also filling in to help the midfield whenever Kante, Kovacic or Jorginho (or as his shirt said Jorghino) were out of position. Fully redeemed his weekend performance and hopefully continues it...
Pulisic. What a great signing he is going to be for us this season. There was a, dare I say it, resembling Eden Hazard about him last night with his electric pace, quick dribbling feet and by the looks of it a great finisher too. Unfortunately his goal was ruled out for offside but the shot tucked in passed into Adrian's near post was no easy finish! Not to mention his assisted pass to Giroud for our first which was placed into the far corner of Adrian’s goal...I think he will be a big part of us getting top four this season and for a 20 year old and can only get better.
But personally I felt as though everyone played well for us last night. I can't think of a single player that didn't - Emerson at left back was monumental, Kepa pulled of an amazing double save from Salah and Van Dijk, Mount and Abraham came on with a burst of energy and Jorginho came up with some world class passes and wicked break up play, not to mention two coolly taken penalties too.
I have high hopes for this season, let's now roll on Sunday! #CFC #KTBFFH
