Why Lampard's Chelsea will be the "little horses" again next season

Back in 2014, Jose Mourinho came out with one of his most Mourinho lines, stating Chelsea were the "little horses" of the 13/14 title race and I have a feeling this coming season will be the same.

Lampard should learn from Mourinho's little horses. Mourinho added it was not Chelsea's "objective" to win the league, adding: "Our objective is to build the team. I want to start the next pre-season and say this season we are going to win the league. This season, I can't."

In the 13/14 season, it was clear Chelsea were a few players short of dominating. We had a solid foundation at the back with experienced players but no threat going forward. This year is the same but the opposite - signings of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, and possibly now Kai Havertz, makes our threat going forward look incredibly dangerous but we are yet to form a stable backline.

If Frank Lampard wants to take Chelsea back to winning league titles, he will need at least another three transfer windows before getting anywhere near close to that. Jurgen Klopp had eight transfer windows before he made Liverpool title winners again, asking for the fans to be patient...“Please give us time to do the work but when I sit here in four years, I think we may have one title."

I believe we are short of four players from competing again. Chelsea needs a new left-back, a goalkeeper, and two center-backs. I personally can't see us getting all four of these targets in one summer transfer window, especially after the attacking signings we've already made.

Chelsea also has a serious amount of deadwood at the club too. Players like Alonso, Emerson, Rudiger, Christensen, and Kepa have all had their chances in a blue shirt but fallen short on plenty of occasions. If we can manage to move these players on, we may be able to create a strong enough transfer fund to spend.

I feel as though next season will still be a developing season and Chelsea fans will need to be patient. For years, Chelsea has had a revolving door of managers, where we were still able to win trophies year after year but there was no firm stability. We'd win a league title one season but drop out of Europe the following year - this maybe finally the time where we can look at the position of manager and see a future in that place under Frank Lampard!

Every club goes has to go through a period where they rebuild and this is our time to do exactly that. If we can manage to sign the likes of Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Declan Rice, or a world-class goalkeeper, it'll be a great step in the right direction of getting back to where we belong.

Frank Lampard would have had four solid transfer windows to rebuild by the start of the 21/22 season and I think we have the opportunity to create a really special squad for years to come. But we must remain patient next season and keep our expectations realistic.
